After a 23-day trial, an Indore trial court sentenced a man to death for raping and murdering a four-year-old-girl reports NDTV.

The convict, Naveen Gadke, picked up the girl from outside Rajwada Fort in the city on 20 April when she was sleeping on the streets with her parents who sell balloons for a living. Naveen who was known to the family, picked up the girl in the wee hours of the morning and took her to the basement of a building and raped her. He then killed her because she was crying and making too much noise. Her body was spotted hours later by a shopkeeper.

Naveen, who was apparently a cousin of the girls’ mother, was arrested the same day.

Special public prosecutor Akram Sheikh had earlier urged sessions court judge Varsha Sharma to treat the case as the "rarest of the rare" and award capital punishment to the man.

Terming it an "inhuman act", Ms Sharma said, "Such a small child who didn't know anything other than crying was treated inhumanly”.
