India Seeks Consular Access to ‘Mumbai Man’ Arrested in Pakistan

India has sought from Pakistan consular access to a person, reportedly an Indian, who has been arrested for not possessing travel and visa documents.

Sheikh Nabi Ahmed, who hailed from Jogeshwari East in Mumbai, was taken into custody on 19 May after he failed to produce any travel or visa documents, according to media reports.

A case has been filed under Article 14 of the Foreign Act 1946 for illegal entry and stay in a country, as reported by Pakistan media. The man has been sent to 14-day judicial custody, as CNN-News18 reports.

Sheikh Nabi Ahmed, who hailed from Jogeshwari East in Mumbai, was taken into custody on 19 May after he failed to produce any travel or visa documents, The Express Tribune reported.

According to police, the Indian national was walking along Nazimuddin Road in Sector F-8 when he was stopped at a check post. Police demanded to check his visa documents after he told them that he was an Indian. However, Ahmed could not produce any documents and was taken into police custody, the daily said.

An official of the Indian High Commission, however, said that the mission does not have any information about the arrest so far.

The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad is "in touch with the government" to confirm if Nabi is one of the people who had figured in interrogation of people connected with SIMI in 2005-06. Maharashtra ATS says they are "not sure if he is the same person arrested in Pakistan”.

This incident comes on the heels of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) verdict on staying Kulbhushan Jadhav’s execution.
