On Tuesday, 26 June 2018, the nation woke up to disturbing news. India has been ranked as the most dangerous country for women.

According to a poll by global experts, released on 26 June, the country was ranked No. 1 for atrocities against women. India, the survey says, is unsafe for women due to the high risk of sexual violence and incidents of women being forced into slave labour.

The poll was a repeat of the 2011 survey in which experts ranked Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Pakistan, India and Somalia as the most dangerous countries for women, in that order.

Experts said India moving to the top of the poll showed that not enough was being done to tackle the danger women faced, more than five years after the rape and murder of a student on a bus in Delhi made violence against women a national priority, reported Reuters.

The country, obviously upset with the survey result, took to social media to express concern.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi, among many others, took the opportunity to point fingers at Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Many others called it a shameful moment for the country.
