Even as Odisha stares at a drought with more than half of its blocks witnessing deficient rainfall, a clash broke out on Sunday, 4 August, between people of two villages in Cuttack district over farmland irrigation that left a person dead and 10 others injured.
Police officials said Sridhar Samal (44) of Sagar village in Cuttack district was killed by an arrow shot over an ongoing dispute in sharing of water from a pond.
In the ensuing clash between people of the two villages, 10 people were left injured, a few of them severely, Inspector general of police (central range) Soumendra Priyadarshi said.

The husband of a pradhan was shot dead and two others were injured after four unidentified men fired at them at a village in Sultanpur district in UP on Sunday, 4 August.
Police suspect that the attack was a fallout of an old dispute. The incident occurred a few metres from Walipur police outpost.
The husband, Suresh Yadav, died during treatment at a hospital, while the injured men, Jug Narain and Vijay Kumar, were referred to Lucknow from Sultanpur. Suresh was the husband of Sanjana Yadav, the village head of Hemnapur.

The Kopar Khairane police on Sunday, 6 August, booked two Class 6 boys, studying at a convent school, for allegedly sexually assaulting a boy from their class.
According to the complaint, the incident took place on Thursday. The accused allegedly took the 11-year-old survivor to a separate room and forcefully removed his clothes. The victim tried to resist, but the accused sexually assaulted him. On reaching home, the survivor narrated the incident to his parents, who approached the police on Sunday.

Crime Branch has apprehended a gangster who had been running an interstate extortion racket from Delhi. The accused has been identified as Mirtyunjay Pandey (21), a resident of Bettiah in Bihar.
Pandey was arrested in a joint operation with Bihar police, officials said.
He had come under the police radar after he tried to extort money from a well known coaching centre owner in Bihar. He had threatened to eliminate him and his family if his demands were not met.

Three persons have been arrested by the Cyber Crime Branch (CCB) of Ahmedabad for duping a person of Rs 35 lakh under the pretext of being insurance agents for legal protection.
According to officials, the accused – two women and a man – had accessed data of customers of the HDFC Bank Legal Protection Insurance (LPI) scheme.
They used to promise fake refunds and other benefits, claiming them to be on behalf of their company. Then, they asked gullible customers to deposit the premium amount in their bank accounts.

Vikhroli police on Sunday, 4 August, arrested a 19-year-old, Rajesh Varlekar, and detained a minor for allegedly stabbing a 22-year-old man to death at the Vikhroli flyover subway on the eastern express highway (EEH). Police are on the lookout for a third accused.
The victim, Tej Kumar Kariram Ram, worked as a delivery executive for a hotel in the eastern suburbs and was also a part-time Bhojpuri singer, said police.
The incident took place around 10:15 pm on Saturday night, when Ram was out for a delivery near Tagore Nagar in Vikhroli. Police said the accused stabbed him during an alleged mobile theft.

Two men have been arrested for allegedly murdering their friend over a monetary dispute in northeast Delhi’s Seelampur on Sunday morning, 4 August.
Police said they received a call around 6.30am by a man claiming his brother had been murdered. The body of 22-year-old Joginder was found with his throat slit.
A manhunt was launched for three friends of the victim – Irshad, Vikas Kumar Singh and Pradeep Chauhan – based on Joginder’s brother’s complaint. Singh and Chauhan were arrested while Irshad is still absconding.

Bhojpuri actor Pawan Singh, his associate and other unidentified persons were booked by the Mumbai Police on Saturday, 3 August, for allegedly uploading obscene photographs of another actor on social media.
In a written complaint, the actor accused Singh of uploading lewd photographs of her on a social media platform. An officer said an FIR has been registered under Section 509 (assault or criminal force on woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of IPC and IT Act.

A notorious shooter and aide of a northeast Delhi-based gangster wanted in several criminal cases, including that of murders and extortion, was arrested by southeast Delhi police.
He has been identified as Ible Hasan (38), a resident of Abul Fazal Enclave in Jamia Nagar. He was planning to commit a major crime and also kill his rival, police said.
Hasan is one of the main associates of gangster Abdul Naseer, who is currently at large since the police booked him under stringent MCOCA. In Naseer’s absence, Hasan was handling the operations of the gang.
