1. HCL Engineer Kidnapped from Ghaziabad, Rs 15 Lakh Ransom Demanded

A 35-year-old engineer with HCL Technologies in Noida went missing on the night of 23 May after an office cab dropped him at the Raj Nagar Extension crossing in Ghaziabad, when he was on his way to Haridwar to celebrate his birthday. A day later, his wife received a WhatsApp message saying that he had been kidnapped; it demanded Rs 15 lakh in ransom for his release, the police said.

The police are now treating the case as kidnapping for ransom and has formed several teams to trace the missing engineer, Rajiv Kumar Singh. The police said Singh had set out from his office in sector 126 of Noida in an office cab around 11.10pm on 23 May and had opted for a drop at the Raj Nagar Extension crossing. From there, he was supposed to catch a bus to his hometown, Haridwar, to celebrate his birthday on 24 May.

2. Girl Allegedly Gangraped in Front of Her Boyfriend on Goa Beach

A woman was allegedly raped by three men in front of her boyfriend on a beach in South Goa district, police said on Friday, 25 May.

The incident happened at the Sernabhatim beach, 50 km from Panaji on Thursday night.

A senior police officer said that the accused, yet to be identified, accosted the couple on the beach.

3. Muslim Labour Allegedly Beaten in Bengal for Not Answering Queries on PM, National Anthem

A man was allegedly assaulted by four persons in a moving train in West Bengal, after he failed to reply to their queries on the prime minister and the national anthem, police said on Friday, 25 May.

The victim, a migrant labourer, was on his way to Kaliachak in Malda district from Howrah on 14 May, when the four persons got into the train and sat next to his seat after he had briefly deboarded at a station, a police officer said.

Upon his arrival, they suddenly started asking him questions about Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the national anthem and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, he said, adding, the man was roughed up when he could not reply to the queries.

4. Angry over Break-Up, Youth Attacks Woman with Sword

A 21-year-old woman was left battling for life after her ex-boyfriend stabbed her with a sword in south Delhi’s Vasant Vihar on Wednesday, 22 May, evening. The woman had broken up with the man, Hari Kanth, and that had angered him. He was arrested from his house in Vasant Kunj.

Police was informed after the woman’s mother found her lying in a pool of blood on the balcony of their house. In her complaint, she told the police that Kanth had visited their house around 7pm, spoke to the woman for two hours and then left. The woman locked herself in a room after that.

Family members said around 9.30pm, Kanth returned and asked the mother to send the woman outside the house. “The two went to the balcony and got into an argument. After some time, Kanth came inside holding a blood-stained sword and threatened me,” the woman’s mother said.

5. Man Failed to Get Passport, Made Bomb Hoax Calls

Delhi Police finally got to the bottom of who had called in twice about bombs placed in the passport office at ITO.

On Friday, 25 May, the cops arrested the man who admitted to making the hoax calls because he was angry at his application for a passport having been rejected. Police depended on the clue about the caller having light-coloured hair to nab Rukshar Ahmed.

Ahmed, a tailor from Kanpur, thrice applied for a new passport, but was rejected each time since he already possessed one. His passport is in the custody of his father, who confiscated it after Ahmed was deported from Australia in 2016 for overstaying. Though he now wished to go to the US, his father refused to return his passport.

6. Fake Video Sparks Attacks, 1 Killed, 90 Hurt in 25 Days

Fear continues to grip several districts of Karnataka, 25 days after a fake video on child-lifters first surfaced, pushing weapon-wielding mobs to attack people on mere suspicion.

Though the police department has been reiterating that the video is fake, a 26-year-old man has been lynched in Bengaluru and at least 90 innocents have been assaulted across the state.

On Friday, 25 May, three women garment factory employees in Vijayanagara Gutte, near Whitefield, were locked up by a mob. The jurisdictional police, who rushed to the spot and rescued them, have registered a case.

7. Chandigarh: Man Gets 20-Year Jail for Raping His 2 Minor Daughters, Fined Rs 2.05 Lakh

A man was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment by the special women’s court of the Additional District and Sessions Judge on Friday, 25 May, for raping his two minor daughters. A fine of Rs 2.05 lakh was also imposed on the father which would be split between the victims.

The 45-year-old convict, a resident of Manimajra, was handed down the sentence by ADJ Poonam R Joshi under Section 6 of the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act.

According to the prosecution, the case was registered on 25 September, 2017, when the accused was arrested on the complaint of his two daughters, aged 16 years and 7 years.

8. Woman Raped by Man She Befriended on Facebook

A 23-year-old woman has alleged that a man she befriended on Facebook about a year ago raped her several times and blackmailed her after making video of the act, police said on 25 May.

The woman, a resident of Gurgaon Sector-5, approached the woman police station and registered a complaint against Rahul, a resident of Faridabad.

9. Man Arrested for Being Major Distributor of Marijuana

The Delhi Police has arrested a man accused of being a major distributor of marijuana in the city and seized 270.4 kg of the contraband from his vehicle.

The Inter-border Gangs Investigation Squad (IGIS) of the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police arrested Dharamveer Kumar (28) from Dichao Depot in southwest Delhi and seized the huge cache of marijuana from his vehicle.

The arrest was made after the team received a secret information that a distributor of ganja would come near the Dichao depot in a Mahindra Champion vehicle.

"The Crime Branch team laid a trap near expected place of his arrival and the accused was successfully apprehended," police said.
