The cow politics in the country continues unabated as the Congress government in Rajasthan has now said that those who adopt stray cows will be felicitated on Republic Day and Independence Day, reported The Indian Express.

The Directorate of Gopalan, which works for cow welfare in the state, has told all district collectors: “Those charitable and sensitive citizens, who have adopted stray cows, will be felicitated at the state level by the district collector on Independence/ Republic Day,” the report said.

The previous BJP government in Rajasthan was the first in the country to introduce a ‘Cow Ministry’. Otaram Devasi, who was the first cow minister of the country has now handed over the mantle to Congress’ Pramod Bhaya.

Officials say that the move is aimed at ensuring safety of cows and increasing the income of cow shelters.

“The purpose of the order is to motivate charitable people towards adopting stray cows and sending them to cow shelters. As a result of this, the income of cow shelters will also increase and it will also ensure effective upkeep and maintenance of the animals,” the report quoted Anil Kaushik, joint director, planning, Department of Gopalan, as saying.

The Congress, during its campaign for the Assembly elections in the state, had promised an increase in the number of cow shelters.
