A 26-year-old veterinary doctor was brutally gang raped, suffocated and burnt to death in the outskirts of Hyderabad on Thursday, 28 November. The four accused have been arrested. Identified as Mohammed Areef (26), Jollu Shiva (20), Jollu Naveen (20) and Chintakunta Chennakeshavulu (20), they are natives of Narayanpet district.

The incident has left the country reeling in shock.

“She was not coming back from a party. She was wearing ‘appropriate’ clothes, yet this happened to her,” said Tannishtha Sinha, postgraduate student in Kolkata.

Many have criticised the statement made by Telangana Home Minister – “We're saddened by the incident, crime happens but police is alert and controlling it. Unfortunate that despite being educated, she called her sister and not '100', had she called 100 she could've been saved.”

“It's not the girl responsibility to call the police every time she feels unsafe. There should be police deployed everywhere and CCTV installed,” said Tasneem, a student from Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi.

“These men apparently tried to get rid the number plate and burn her body thinking they could get away from this... and that is itself a huge problem,” said Chennai-based artist Jikki Nair, stressing on the need for stringent punishment for perpetrators.

“There should be more women in key roles in administration so that women can feel safe to seek help,” said Annie Singh, a doctor in Kolkata.
