Danish Ahmed, a militant seen at the funeral of top Hizbul Mujahideen commander Sabzar Bhat, surrendered before the Handwara Police and 21 RR army.
After Sabzar was killed by the Indian military forces, videos of his funeral did the rounds on social media. An unknown militant was spotted wearing a battle pouch with a grenade in the video. After police investigation, the militant was identified as Danish Ahmed, a B.Sc third year student of Doon PG College of Agriculture Science and Technology.
He was reportedly picked up by police after he was found involved in incidents of stone-pelting in Handwara, but let off after counselling in view of his career.
Police contacted Danish's parents when they learnt that he had joined Hizbul and urged them to counsel their son to surrender, maintaining that if he did so, he would be treated fairly under law.
According to Rising Kashmir, Danish told police that he got in touch with militants of south Kashmir through social media and then took up militancy. He also confessed to being ordered to "activate" Kashmiri youths into militancy by the Hizbul commanders. He said after spending a few days, he realised the futility of militancy.
Danish is being considered under the J&K Surrendered Militants Rehabilitation Policy, police said.
