Veteran historian Satish Chandra passed away late on Friday evening. He was 95. He was most known for his work on the Mughal Empire and its downfall in India. He was also the author of NCERT’s ‘History of Medieval India’, a book that was a mandate for most CBSE curriculums and aspiring civil servants.
Chandra founded the JNU’s Centre for Historical Studies and was faculty at the prestigious institution with peers Romila Thapar and Bipan Chandra. He also chaired the University Grants Commission in the 1970s.
Chandra was reportedly on dialysis for over a decade, and had been hospitalised since last week, confirmed his JNU colleagues to Times of India.
The Hindu reported that he will cremated at the Lodhi Road crematorium on Saturday, after which a prayer meeting will be held at Chinmaya Mission.
