Speaking in Lok Sabha on Monday, 6 August, BJP MP Dr Heena Gavit raised the incident of a mob attack on her by a group of Maratha protesters in Maharashtra’s Dhule region.

Alleging that no preventive action was taken by the police when a mob of nearly 200 people attacked her vehicle, Gavit demanded an enquiry and asked for the suspension of the local Superintendent of Police.

Some 200-300 people gheraoed my car, broke the front windshield and tried to kill me. The four police constables present just stood and watched the whole incident unfold.

She further alleged that the 15 to 20 people were taken into custody by the police, but they were let go once an FIR was filed.

There were several MLAs in the meeting from several communities of the society. An MLA whose car had left five minutes before mine wasn’t attacked. I am an Adivasi woman and despite the attack on my car, no offence has been registered under the SC/ST Act.

Gavit asked for an enquiry on the SP in the area stating that the police has not only failed to protect a woman but is also responsible for shielding criminals.

Earlier, she had told The Indian Express that everyone has a right to protest but not at the expense of someone’s life.
