Braving the early morning chill, thousands of devotees thronged gurudwaras across Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh on Saturday, 4 November, to offer prayers on the occasion of Gurpurab, the birth anniversary of the first Sikh guru, Guru Nanak Dev.

Religious fervour took over the holiest of Sikh shrines, Harmandir Sahib, popularly known as the Golden Temple, in Amritsar to mark the birth anniversary of the founder of Sikhism. Thousands of people of different faiths reached the gurudwara complex to offer prayers.

Security was tightened around all the major Sikh shrines in Punjab. 'Langars' (community kitchen) were arranged at most gurdwaras.

Nankana Sahib, the birthplace of Guru Nanak, located 100 km from Lahore, Pakistan, also celebrated the revered saint’s birth anniversary. Nearly 2,600 Sikh devotees have gone to Pakistan to celebrate Gurpurab at Nankana Sahib.
