Govt To Introduce Rs 20 Coins For the First Time in India: Reports

The ministry of Finance on Wednesday, 6 March issued a notification regarding the introduction of Rs 20 coins for the first time in the country, NDTV reported.

27 millimeters in diameter, the coins will be a unique shape of a 12 edge polygon with the outer ring made of 65 percent copper, 15 percent zinc and 20 percent nickel. The inner disc will be 75 per cent copper, 20 per cent zinc and five percent nickel.

According to NDTV, it was nearly 10 years ago, in March 2009, that the Reserve Bank of India had issued the first 10-rupee coin.

The government is also releasing a new series of coins of Re 1, Rs 2, Rs 5 and Rs 10, CNBC-TV18 reported.

The new Re 1 coin will be 20 millimetres in diameter with 83 percent of iron and 17 percent chromium.

The Rs 2 coin will be 23 millimetres in diameter with a metal composition of ferritic stainless steel.

The new nickel brass coins of Rs 5 coin will be 25 millimetres in diameter made of 75 percent copper, 20 percent zinc and 5 percent nickel.

The new Rs 10 coins will be 27 millimetres in diameter and will be two toned like the existing coin. The outer ring will be made of nickel brass with 75 percent copper, 20 percent zinc and 5 percent nickel. The centre will be made of nickel brass with 65 percent copper, 15 percent zinc and 20 percent nickel.
