The tenure of CBDT Chairman PC Mody has been extended by an year, a government order said on Thursday, 29 August.
According to the order, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved "re-appointment" of Mody for a period of one year. Mody was to retire on 31 August.
A 1982-batch Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax cadre) officer, Mody, took over as the Central Board of Direct Taxation (CBDT) chief in February.
The other members are PK Dash, Akhilesh Ranjan and Neena Kumar.
While Dash and Kumar are holding additional charges apart from their regular duties, the CBDT chairman is holding the charge of investigations in an additional capacity.
Meanwhile, CBDT Member Akhilesh Ranjan, who was overlooked for the post of the Board's chairman, has written to the government seeking voluntary retirement, official sources said on Friday, 30 August.
They said Ranjan, who headed the tax force on direct taxes, has sought retirement from the service owing to "family and personal reasons." However, officials privy to the development said the IRS officer would have continued in service had he been elevated to the post of CBDT Chairman.
Ranjan, a 1982-batch Indian Revenue Service officer, was second in the succession line and is stipulated to retire in April next year.
On 19 August, the officer, along with other experts and members, submitted a report to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on revising direct taxes.
The CBDT is headed by a chairman and can have a maximum of six members. It frames policy for the Income-Tax Department.
