Adieu 2017: IPL Tops List of Most Searched News On Google in India

ICC Champions Trophy, UP election results, GST and CBSE results were among the top five most searched news in 2017.

Indian Premier League (IPL) has emerged as the indisputable champion on Google’s list of most searched news in India this year. The list – released by the California-headquartered search engine – consists of various sections ranging from news and business to entertainment.

Following behind IPL on the most searched news in India this year are ICC Champions Trophy, CBSE results, UP election results and the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

The IPL has completed 10 seasons till now. According to a Hindustan Times report, IPL has annually overshadowed any international cricket during the summer months. This year the winner was Nita Ambani-owned Mumbai Indians.

What piqued people’s curiosity this year in IPL was team Gujarat Lions being sued for not paying entertainment tax, rumours of pacer Ashish Nehra’s comeback as a mentor of one of the IPL teams, and Abhishek Bachchan’s revelation of Mumbai Indians’ lucky charm.

Pakistan won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2017. The team beat India by 180 runs in the finals held in London on 18 June. The next ICC Champions Trophy will be held in India in 2021.

CBSE Results

This year the Central Board of Secondary Education’s (CBSE) 12th board result was delayed. Despite the delay, the results were erroneous. The all India topper of CBSE’s class 12th board examination was Raksha Gopal. If all that wasn’t enough to get people to search about it on Google, CBSE decided to make two panels to study the loopholes in the evaluation.

Uttar Pradesh elections results was the fourth most searched news items. Home to the largest population in any state in India, Uttar Pradesh elections were fiercely contested between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Samajwadi Party-Congress alliance and the Bahujan Samaj Party. The BJP swept the voters – and formed the government with Yogi Adityanath as their chief minister and Keshav Prasad Maurya as the deputy chief minister.

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) – India’s new indirect tax regime introduced on 1 July – grabbed headlines. It was naturally among the most searched news as the country switched to the new taxation system.
