#GoodNews: Mumbai’s Badass Women Cops Fight Crime and Fix Cars Too

Thanks to these ladies, Mumbai Police’s Motor Transport Department managed to save more than Rs 70 lakh in 2016.

Women aren’t good drivers, right? And would definitely not know a thing or two about auto repair. How about we trash this sadly popular belief by telling you that a team of 34 women constables now run Mumbai Police’s Motor Transport Department.

Thanks to these ladies, who also double up as mechanics, the department managed to save more than Rs 70 lakh in 2016.

The Mumbai Police owns 4,027 vehicles in total and provides security to VVIP’s almost everyday to move around the city safely. The jeeps, cars and motorbikes often end up going to the women for repair and maintenance work.

“These women repair vehicles such as Boleros and other heavy four-wheelers within weeks. It would take more than two months if a private contractor was handed the job. We are thankful to these women and we will be rewarding them,” Mumbai Police Commissioner Datta Padsalgikar told The Hindu.

The Motor Transport Section of Maharashtra Police was set up in 1948 and mostly saw male constables working as mechanics. The scenario has changed over the last few years with more women opting to drive as well as repair the vehicles.

Constable Nazmunita Munaf Khan repairs around 10-12 beat marshal bikes. She’s been a proud member of the police force for the last 21 years.

“In those days, there were very few of us who opted to be mechanics as it involved a lot of manual labour. Now, many women are interested as technology has made the job a bit easier,” she said.
