#GoodNews: Mysuru Students Invent Automatic Streetlight System

The invention will help save up to 40% of the state’s electricity consumption.

Five students from a Mysuru engineering college have invented a remote streetlight monitoring and control system to help conserve energy, as Times of India reported.

Lights, which need substantial power supply, are a particular worry for the state government.

HN Abhishek, CG Meghana, Abhishek Mayya, R Chethan and G Arjun, are in their final year at the Vidya Vikas Institute of Engineering and Technology, in the electrical and electronics department.

They have invented the technology which will be used in smart highways, having a motion sensor which will light up the lamps when vehicles approach the particular stretch of the road.

As the car moves further away, then lights will dim down.

The technology called smart highway uses wireless sensor network and saves substantial power compared to the existing streetlights that are left on all night. The technology will help save up to 40% of energy. This will reduce power consumption and will efficiently utilise renewable sources

Streetlights can consume up to 50% of a city’s electricity and the innovation can help save on a major amount of power. LED lamps, sensors are used for the experiment which works as a less power consumption model.

The project took nearly eight months to complete and the idea struck them as they would travel during the night.

We spent around Rs 15,000 to procure materials for the project.

The boys recently participated in the ‘Switch Global Expo 2016’ in Gujarat, Vadodara which Piyush Goyal inaugurated. “The minister was delighted with our project and assured it will be implemented in Gujarat,” said Ashishek.
