A Bangalore-bound GoAir flight with 200 on board would have met a tragic fate on Wednesday evening had the locals not been vigilant and alerted the ATC.

Locals noticed smoke emerging from the aircraft’s tail and immediately alerted the PCR, which in turn conveyed it to Delhi’s ATC and the flight was asked to return to the capital’s IGI airport, as DNA reported.

The incident came to light around 7.40 pm, when the 1D CISF was alerted by the Delhi Police who said that two persons saw the tail of a flight on fire, which was flying over Dwarka.

The two witnesses had informed the Delhi Police about the incident and accordingly, the message was conveyed to Airport Operations Control Centre and to the Air Traffic Control. After some efforts, the flight was identified as Go Air flight – G8 557 – which had departed for Bangalore at 7.28 pm from the IGI Airport.

The pilot had also noticed an engine failure and sought clearance for landing on priority. A full emergency was declared due to engine failure and it was provided the clearance to land.
