A 14-year-old girl from Madurai is battling for life after her stalker doused her in kerosene and set her on fire, allegedly over a rejected proposal.

The incident took place in Nadukottai in Thirumangalam region on Friday, 16 February. Ramya*, a class nine student, was returning home from school with her mother when 20-year-old Balamurugan set her on fire. He reportedly lived in the same neighbourhood as Ramya.

Witnessing the incident, bystanders tried to douse the fire and rushed her to the Thirumangalam Government Hospital immediately. She suffered 60 percent burns and is fighting for her life.

After setting Ramya on fire, Balamurugan ran away from the area.

The man lived close to the girl’s house. He was in love with her and she rejected his proposal. Following this, he attacked her. He is currently absconding. Efforts are on to find him.

On her way back home from college, John* stopped Meriam*, a first-year Business Administration student at a private college, and demanded she reciprocate his feelings.

(The Quint, in association with BitGiving, has launched a crowdfunding campaign for an 8-month-old who was raped in Delhi on 28 January 2018. The baby girl, who we will refer to as ‘Chhutki’, was allegedly raped by her 28-year-old cousin when her parents were away. She has been discharged from AIIMS hospital after undergoing three surgeries, but needs more medical treatment in order to heal completely. Her parents hail from a low-income group and have stopped going to work so that they can take care of the baby. You can help cover Chhutki’s medical expenses and secure her future. Every little bit counts. Click here to donate.)
