Ghana-based NRI Neeraj Chandan, who was allegedly robbed of cash and other valuables at Bhubaneshwar’s Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) on 2 June, sought the help of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik in tracing his belongings on 5 June, Odisha Sun Times reported.
Chandan had alleged that someone stole his wife’s handbag containing their four passports, USD 3,000, Ghana national cards and three mobiles while waiting for a friend at the exit gate of the airport on 2 June, the report added. He opened a Twitter account to reach out to the ministers and officials.
The NRI who had come to visit the Puri Jagannath Temple with his family for the first time, sought the chief minister’s intervention exactly three later in a tweet.
The vulnerable NRI had again shared his plight online, this time seeking assistance from from Odisha Director General Police (DGP) RP Sharma. He posted a copy of the complaint on Twitter.
“We have collected the CCTV footage with the help of the CISF personnel deployed at the airport. We are verifying it,” Bhubaneswar DCP Anup Kumar Sahu said, giving assurances that the accused would be nabbed soon.
Chandan is a Ludhiana native and is working as a chartered accountant in Ghana, the report added.
