In a significant development following the Doklam standoff between the Indian and Chinese troops on the India-China-Bhutan international trijunction, Gautam Bambawale, India's High Commissioner to Pakistan, has been appointed the country's new Ambassador to China. He will replace Vijay Gokhale.

A 1984-batch IFS officer, Bambawale is expected to take up the new assignment shortly, the External Affairs Ministry said in a statement on Thursday.

Bambawale knows Mandarin Chinese and has served in Hong Kong and Beijing earlier.
