Atiq Ahmed murder live updates: The bodies of gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were buried in Prayagraj on Sunday, 16 April.

The two were shot dead by three assailants while being taken for medical examination. The alleged attackers, identified as Lavlesh Tiwari (22), Mohit alias Shani Purane (23) and Arun Kumar Maurya (18), were sent to 14-day judicial custody.

The murder was caught on live television as Atiq and Ashraf were talking to reporters when the firing took place.

  • UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered for a probe by a three-member judicial committee, which will submit its report within two months.

  • The police have arrested Lavlesh Tiwari, Mohit alias Shani Purane and Arun Kumar Maurya and have also filed an FIR in the case.

Atiq Ahmed's Killers Sent to 14-Day Judicial Custody

The three shooters who allegedly killed Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf have been sent to 14-day judicial custody, news agency ANI reported.

The bodies of gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were buried in Prayagraj on Sunday, 16 April, amid heavy police presence.

'Jungle Raj' in UP: Mehbooba Mufti

Reacting to Atiq's killing, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti said that, "We know that Atiq Ahmed was not a good person. But the manner in which he was murdered in police custody makes it look like there is a 'jungle raj' in UP."

Judicial Commission Formed to Probe Murder

Following the killing of gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed, and his brother Ashraf in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj on 15 April, the state government on Sunday, 16 April, constituted a three-member judicial commission to probe the shooting that transpired in the presence of police and the media.

The commission will be headed by high court judge (retired) Arvind Kumar Tripathi, and retired judge Brijesh Kumar Soni and former DGP Subesh Kumar Singh will be its members.

UP Police Forms Two SITs

Meanwhile, UP Police has also formed two Special Investigation Teams (SIT) to probe the killing of Atiq Ahmad and his brother Asraf.

A three-member SIT, headed by ADG Prayagraj zone Bhanu Bhaskar, including CP Prayagraj and Director FSL has been formed by DGP RK Vishwakarma.

Whereas, the second SIT consisting of three members has been formed by Prayagraj Police in the murder case registered at Shahganj police station.

'Attackers Wanted To Wipe Out His Gang': FIR

The three assailants, Lavlesh Tiwari, Mohit alias Shani Purane and Arun Kumar Maurya, who allegedly murdered gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed "wanted to wipe out Atiq and his gang and establish supremacy in the criminal circles," according to the First Information Report (FIR) filed in the case by the Uttar Pradesh Police.

"They were posing as mediapersons for days and were looking for an opportunity to carry out the operation but hadn't found the right time," the FIR stated.

'Seems Scripted': Tejashwi Yadav

Bihar Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav on Monday said that the whole incident "seemed scripted".

"I have no sympathies for crime or criminals. There are laws, Constitution, and courts to eliminate crime. Even the assassins of a PM (Rajiv Gandhi) were made to undergo trial and they were punished. What happened in UP was not the funeral procession of Atiq Ahmed but that of law. UP tops in terms of custodial deaths. This has been done for cheap publicity. Everyone knows the kind of rule in UP. If this happened in a state ruled by opposition then no one would have been silent. Human rights commission would have taken congnisance. This seemed scripted," Yadav said.

'Encounters Have Become A Normal Thing in UP: Mamata Banerjee

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Monday said that, "Encounters have become a normal thing for the people of Uttar Pradesh. People of UP should protest against these encounters. If anything happens in West Bengal, they (BJP) send central agencies."

'Attackers Not Related to VHP or Bajrang Dal': VHP

VHP international working president Alok Kumar, on reports about attakers affiliations, said that "none of them are related to VHP or Bajrang Dal."

"None of the three accused has any relation with Vishwa Hindu Parishad or Bajrang Dal. Any information about the same is a complete lie. The investigation will unveil the truth" says VHP international working president Alok Kumar on attackers who killed gangster Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf.

'102 Cases on Atiq Ahmed': Police

UP police said that a total of 102 cases were registered against Atiq Ahmed, while 54 cases were registered against his brother Ashraf, reported news agency ANI.

'Assailants Shifted to Pratapgarh District Jail': Police

UP police on Monday said that the three shooters, Arun Maurya, Sunny Singh and Lavlesh Tiwari, were transferred to District Jail in Pratapgarh from Prayagraj jail.

'Opposition's Vote Bank Politics': Union Minister

After comments by Tejashwi Yadav, Mamata Banerjee, and other opposition leaders, Union Minister RK Singh on Wednesday said that, "they are in search of vote-bank politics that's why they are shedding tears."

Tejashwi Yadav is Deputy CM but he addressed Atiq Ahmed as 'Atiq ji' who had cases of murder, kidnapping, extortion against him. Atiq used to kill witnesses against him. He confessed he had connection with LeT. A criminal got killed in gangwar. Be it SP or West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, they are in search of vote-bank politics that's why they are shedding tears," Singh said, as quoted by news agency ANI.

'For How Long...': CM Hemant Soren

Reacting to the murder of Atiq Ahmed and his brother, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren was quoted as saying, "For how long the country can be run by managing things...there's punishment for every crime in the law. The incident is raising many questions."
