Munna Bajrangi, one of Uttar Pradesh’s dreaded gangsters, was shot dead inside the state’s Baghpat jail on Monday, 9 July. Bajrangi was to be produced in court on Monday morning in connection with an extortion case.
According to NDTV, Bajrangi was transferred from Jhansi to the Baghpat district jail on Sunday.
The forensic unit team arrived around noon to investigate the murder. Assuring a fair investigation, Baghpat SP said,
Speaking to ANI, the Additional Director General, Prison said that a magisterial and judicial enquiry has been requested into the matter. “The accused, Sunil Rathi has been detained and is being interrogated. The jailor, deputy jailor, warden and head warden have been suspended”, he added.
Earlier, Bajrangi’s advocate V Srivastava had said a convict lodged in the jail shot the gangster at 6:30 am and hid the pistol behind the gutter.
Bajrangi, who was also called Prem Prakash, is facing several charges, including that of killing BJP lawmaker Krishnanand Rai in 2005.
Speaking to ANI, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that he has ordered a judicial inquiry and suspension of the jailor.
Just days before his death, on 29 June, Bajrangi’s wife had alleged that his life was in danger.
"I want to tell UP Chief Minister Adityanath ji that my husband's life is in danger. A conspiracy is being hatched to kill him in a fake encounter," she can be seen speaking in a video message.
