According to an official order, the Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of former Intelligence Bureau (IB) Chief Asif Ibrahim as a Special Envoy for counter terrorism and extremism in the National Security Council Secretariat.

Ibrahim’s role new role will help government in the formulation of strategies to deal with radicalisation of youths in India owing to the rise of ISIS and security challenges in Af-Pak region.

He will hold the rank of Secretary to the government and will hold the post for a period of three years or until further orders.

Ibrahim is a 1977 batch IPS officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, and had retired as Intelligence Bureau Director in December last year. He is considered an authority on issues involving the minority community and is said to have good contacts in West Asian states.
