External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Monday, 26 June, launched a Passport Seva app to facilitate smooth issuance of passports to the citizens of India.

Swaraj was addressing officials of passport centres and members of the external affairs ministry, news agency ANI reported.

The external affairs minister also said that the two new schemes – passport application from anywhere in India and filling application form from mobile phones – will make the process of obtaining passports simpler and easier.

Swaraj said that there was just one passport centre in Assam's Guwahati for the entire north-eastern part of the county when she took over as the external affairs minister.

The biggest problem was that of distance, she said, adding that new passport centres were opened in all the states of the region (north-east).

Swaraj said that currently 260 passport centres were functioning across the country, and she plans to expand the network to all the Lok Sabha constituencies.
