Prime Minister Modi has announced Rs 500 crore for flood-hit Bihar, which has lost 482 lives to the rising waters. As many as 1.71 crore people in 19 districts of Bihar are still affected by the deluge, officials said.
The situation in flood-hit Assam though improved substantially and in north Bengal, the flood waters had receded from most of the areas in the six flood-hit districts.
The number of deaths due to floods in Bihar rose to 341, said Anirudh Kumar, Additional Secretary of the state’s Department of Disaster Management.
As many as 69.81 lakh people have been affected in 13 districts of the state. PM Modi conducted an aerial survey of the flood-hit areas on 26 August.
The floods had engulfed 98 blocks and 1,070 panchayats in the state. The number of affected districts went up to 13, with Muzaffarpur being the latest addition.
The Chief Minister, after conducting an aerial survey of the flooded districts, said he had told officials to speed up rescue and relief work.
Around 152 people have died and 1.5 crore hit by the floods in West Bengal, said Mamata Banerjee.
With no heavy rain on 22 August, the situation in north Bengal, including in the two worst-hit districts of Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri, registered a slight improvement, even as the calamity claimed seven lives so far in the region.
Apart from Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri, North Dinajpur, Cooch Behar and Malda were also affected, sources in the respective district administrations said.
The state authorities were monitoring the relief-and-rescue operations round-the-clock as per the instructions of the Chief Minister, officials added.
The situation continued to deteriorate in Assam, with 11 more people losing their lives on 16 August. Around 33.45 lakh people in 24 districts have been affected due to the floods.
The third wave of floods claimed 39 lives in the north-eastern state. The death toll now stands at 112. The entire northeast region remained cut off from other parts of the country due to snapped rail lines.
