As many as 15 people were killed and three others injured in a road accident on the Hyderabad-Bengaluru national highway near Veldurthi in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district on Saturday, 11 May.
Fakirappa, superintendent of police, Kurnool, told news agency ANI: “A private bus, on its way to Bengaluru, tried to overtake a two-wheeler and lost control. It rammed into the divider and hit a tempo traveler coming from the opposite direction.”
The victims mostly belonged to Telangana’s Jogulamba Gadwal district. They were going back to their village after attending an engagement ceremony, The News Minute report added.
Such was the impact of the collision, that 13 people reportedly died on the spot, while two succumbed to injuries at a nearby hospital. The front portion of the bus got completely crushed in the accident.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu, YSRCP president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and working president of Telangana Rashtra Samithi KT Rama Rao took to Twitter to condole the incident.
"I hope the injured recover quickly," the prime minister's office tweeted, quoting Modi.
CM Naidu, meanwhile, said that the authorities have been instructed to provide immediate treatment to the injured.
Translation of Naidu’s tweet: “Most of the deaths, in the road accident at Kurnool district, were very painful. The authorities have been ordered to provide immediate treatment to the injured victims. I express my deepest condolences to the families of the deceased.”
A statement issued by the YSRCP said: “Jagan Mohan Reddy has expressed grief over the loss of human life in the road accident at Veldurthi in Kurnool district and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family members and wished for the early recovery of the injured.”
KT Rao also expressed his condolences on Twitter:
Actor turned-politician and Jana Sena Party (JSP) chief Pawan Kalyan also expressed his condolences to the family members of the victims, the report added.
