Amid agitations against the cattle slaughter ban imposed by the Union government, a Facebook page has been circulating a video allegedly showing some horrific means of protest.
Called Redefining Animal Welfare (RAW), the Facebook page has dedicated itself to “exposing irregularities in animal welfare in India”. It shared a now viral video of a suicidal bull jumping off a building, and claimed that the animal was pushed off the roof in protest of the ban.
A post on the page read, “This is how few beef eating fanatics decided to kill this cow! Where are the Delhi angels and the publicity freaks? Because this incident happened in the north!”
The video, which has been shared 56 times so far, has made false claims on its Facebook post without furbishing any proof. The same video has also been shared on Twitter as video proof of “protest against the recent government regulation”.
Watch the full video below:
The claim is factually wrong on three accounts.
Firstly, the animal that appears to be a bull and not a cow is clearly seen jumping off in its own accord. The bull can be seen estimating the height of the building while standing on the edge of the roof, before jumping off, while at least five men stand a few meters apart.
The men are seen to be running towards the animal as it hurtles towards the ground.
Secondly, the original video was posted on 27 July, 2015, when neither had the government implemented the ban, nor had the people taken to the streets in protest.
In fact, the video was posted two months before cow vigilantes had claimed the first victim in Dadri Mob Lynching, which had triggered outrage against gau rakshaks across the country.
Thirdly, the location of the incident cannot be confirmed to be Delhi or the North at all. According to the article that published the video in 2015, the area is believed to be in Bhavnagar in Gujarat.
