Election Commission Expected to Announce Dates For Prez Polls Today

The Election Commission is expected to announce the dates for the upcoming Presidential Elections in a press conference today. The press conference is scheduled for 5 pm today at the Nirvachan Sadan, New Delhi.

The elections have to be held before 25 July 2017, with the term of incumbent President Pranab Mukherjee ending on 24 July.

Contest Between Congress-led Opposition and NDA

The elections are expected to be a contest between the ruling BJP-led NDA and the Opposition led by Congress, although neither have announced their candidates.

Congress chief Sonia Gandhi is attempting to stitch a consensus together with other opposition parties so as to field a common candidate for the polls.

However, with the backing of regional players including the Telangana Rashtra Samiti, the BJP has the edge to get the candidate of its choice elected.

The polls are also significant from the point of view of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, as they would indicate the strength and unity of the Opposition against the BJP.
