Olympian Dutee Chand, whose cousin died in a car accident on 6 September, said that the infamous Blue Whale Challenge may have led to his death.

Talking to the The Quint, the athlete said that her 24-year-old cousin Utkal Keshari Guin met with the accident early in the morning on 6 September. She suspects the involvement of the Blue Whale game due to some of his Facebook posts.

My cousin did not know how to drive a car. He used to ride a bike or a scooty. But he took my Alto car early in the morning without my knowledge on that day.

Doubts Due to Facebook Posts

Some of Guin’s Facebook posts, including a photo of him standing at the edge of a roof, raised Chand’s suspicion.

My cousin had shared three photos on Facebook which indicate that he might have been playing the Blue Whale Challenge game. One of the photos was of a whale cut onto his hand.

‘He Was Unhappy,’ Says Dutee

Dutee said his failed attempts to get admission in a medical college may have had a part to play.

He could not make it to medical school even after four attempts. This made him unhappy and he was constantly sad about it. But I had counselled him and even got him a job in Bhubaneswar.

Police Refute Blue Whale Theory

Even as Chand expressed her suspicions, police on Monday ruled out the Blue Whale game angle in the death of her brother.

The death was due to a road accident and not related to the game, a police official in Odisha’s Kuakhia police station was quoted as saying by The New Indian Express.

According to the police, while Guin was sitting in the front seat of the car, one Dhaneswar Das was driving the car.“How can Utkal carry out the command of the game’s admin when he was not behind the wheel?” the official asked.
