Two naval officers who died in an air crash- including the country’s first woman officer to die in the line of duty - last week were cremated this weekend will full military honours.

Lt. Kiran Shekhawat and Lt. Abhinav Nagori were on the Dornier aircraft which went down on Tuesday night off the coast of Goa.

Last rites of 27-year-old Lt. Shekhawat was held in her hometown of Mewat in Haryana. Accompanied by the Navy officials, the body of the young officer was brought there wrapped around in the tricolours.

A native of a village in Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu district, she had recently married a fellow Naval officer, Vivek Singh Chokker, who was posted to Kerala.

Lt. Shekhawat was part of the contingent of women in the Navy who marched in the Republic Day parade this year.

In Udaipur, Lt. Abhinav Nagori also received full military honours at his funeral on Saturday.

Commander Nikhil Kuldip Joshi, who was the pilot of the aircraft, was rescued by fishermen.
