For many, the 1st of the month comes with salaries and with it, multiple monetary obligations. That’s keeping Soni worried today. As the calendar moves to the 1st, she has to find money for her shop rental, purchasing of goods, disbursement of salaries and household expenses.

The problem is, she has little to spare this month.

Soni – who runs a small parlour in the Khirki area of New Delhi, a middle class colony – usually earns Rs 35,000 a month. She was expecting to earn at least Rs 40,000 this month because of the wedding rush. However, thanks to the cash crunch, she has made just Rs 15,000.

With little business and multiple payments to take care of, Soni is a worried woman today.
