A couple allegedly linked to the Islamic State's Khorasan module was on Sunday, 8 March, arrested from south Delhi's Jamia Nagar for allegedly instigating anti-CAA violence in the national capital, the police said.
A Delhi court has sent the couple to police remand till 17 March.
The husband been identified as Jahanjeb Sami Wani and the wife as Hina Bashir Beg, said Pramod Singh Kushwah, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell).
“They were involved in instigating anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act protests,” he said.
The couple was planning a suicide attack in Delhi, reported NDTV quoting police sources.
They were also inciting Muslims to take up violent struggle against the state, the sources said. Sami reportedly also used to work in a private company. The couple also ran a social media platform called “Indian Muslims unite,” which worked towards mobilising support against the CAA and the NRC.
Further, four mobile phones, one laptop, one external hard-disc and other incriminating material were seized from their house.
The sources have also stated that from the interrogation, “it has been found that they have created several anonymous IDs on several social media platforms such as telegram, facebook, threema, sure spot, Instagram, twitter etc propagating the ideology of banned outfit ISIS and circulating material against government established by law for enacting Citizenship Amendment Act.”
An FIR under 124A/153A of Indian Penal Code and under UAPA Act PS Special Cell was registered against them. The police sources added that further interrogation is currently underway in the case.
However, Wani’s family alleges a witch hunt. Sehrish Sami, Wani’s sister says that what the cops are calling ‘incriminating material’ are just basic fundamental books on Islam. The police also said that the literature contained anti-CAA material to which Sami said that her brother and sister-in-law would always stay away from anything like this, and minded their own business.
