Delhi Commission for Women’s (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal on Monday came out in support of Gurmehar Kaur – a Delhi University student and daughter of Kargil martyr Captain Mandeep Singh – who has been facing strong backlash on social media for her campaign #StudentsAgainstAVBP. The situation got so intense that two women constables from Delhi Police will now provide her round-the-clock security.

Speaking to the media, the DCW chief expressed disappointment at the abuse faced by the LSR student, after she expressed her opinion on the violence in Ramjas College.

It is shameful that the daughter of a Kargil martyr is being threatened with rape...We should respect Gurmehar’s opinion and respect her right to raise her voice for what she believes in...We do not support any anti-national opinion or anti-national activities, but the DCW will not stand by while a young woman like Gurmehar is threatened with rape for speaking her mind.

She further added that the DCW has written to the Delhi Police asking them to register an FIR, and put those people who have threatened her with sexual violence on social media behind bars

We are writing to the police to make sure these people, regardless of whichever party they are from, should not be allowed to curb the voice of any woman in such a manner. We have evidence. We have names of the boys who have threatened her. If the culprits are not booked, then it will set a wrong precedent and encourage goons to threaten anyone the same way.

Earlier, the Lady Sri Ram College student whose social media campaign against the ABVP went viral recently said that like her father, Kargil martyr Captain Mandeep Singh, she would not hesitate in taking a bullet for the country. Gurmehar further added that she has received threats on various platforms.

This is not about politics, this is about students and campuses. Nobody can threaten a women with rape...But I will not get scared because I know that I am taking a stand for the right reasons. And it does not matter to me that you are an organisation which is in power. No one can tell me that I should be scared.
