The police have not filed an FIR based on a complaint by the parents of Darshan Solanki, an 18-year-old Dalit student who died by suicide at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay on 12 February.
Details: Solanki's family came to Mumbai's Powai Police station to submit a formal complaint on Thursday, 16 March.
"The police have denied to register FIR in the case," the Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle (APPSC) IIT Bombay wrote in an Instagram post.
Yes, but: The parents have been asked to depose before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) instead.
The SIT was formed on 28 February to probe the IIT Bombay student's death
Zoom in: In the complaint accessed by The Quint, Darshan's father Ramesh Solanki alleged that:
"Darshan suffered constant caste-based discrimination in the IIT Bombay campus"
"IIT Bombay authorities are blatantly denying the caste-based discrimination faced by my son in the campus and are reducing the matter to a suicide on account of academic pressure," the complaint read
Ramesh further alleged that clone copies of Darshan's phone and laptop, which have been seized by Powai Police, have not been provided
He ended the complaint by demanding that an FIR be registered in the matter of his son's death "under section 302 and/or section 306 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860 and other relevant penal provisions and also the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 and Maharashtra Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1999, and to investigate the case."
