NHRC Sends Notice to Kerala Govt Over Rape & Murder of Law Student

Jisha, a Dalit law student was found raped and murdered in her home with her intestines exposed.

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo moto cognizance of media reports of the brutal rape and murder of a 30-year-old law student in the Ernakulam district of Kerala and issued a notice to Government of Kerala.

The nature of the murder has sent shockwaves across the state as postmortem reports revealed that her internal organs were also severely damaged.

Jisha was found dead in her home last Thursday, with thirty wounds on her body. According to the postmortem report, her intestines had spilled out of her body. The report suggested that she was beaten savagely with a sharp object.

The incident occurred inside her house, neighbours had seen the victim at around 1 pm. So it might have happened after that. Police were informed after her mother saw the body around 8 pm. As of now we have not got any evidence (pointing to an accused). It is an area where a lot of migrant labourers reside, so we are extending our enquiry to them too.

Jisha, a law student, lived with her mother Rajeswari on a plot of ‘purambokku’ land. At the time of the murder, the victim was alone at home as her mother had gone out to work.

Hasna, a trade Union activist and Jisha’s junior in college met her mother on Monday. Speaking to The Quint, she said:

Her mother is inconsolable and requested all of us to go home and take care of ourselves. She pleaded us to be safe and secure. Jisha was an introvert. She hardly mingled with anybody at college.

The police are questioning two suspects – Jisha’s neighbours – in connection with her rape and murder.

Inspector General of Police Mahipal Yadav has said that the authorities have formed a list of multiple suspects and are in the process of verification. He also stated that they are working on all angles and will be taking this investigation to the logical end.

Kerala’s Home Minister visited the victim’s family at the hospital. He said that the state police is doing their best to bring the victim to justice.

The state police are alert and are trying their level best to unearth the truth. People involved in this heinous crime will be brought to justice soon.

Vice President of the Congress, Rahul Gandhi tweeted that the incident was deeply saddening . He also stated that he spoke to authorities to take ensure quick action.


As more and more details of her horrific rape and murder emerged, users took to social media to register their rage and anger.
