Cyclone Tauktae: PM Modi Announces Rs 1,000 Cr Relief for Gujarat

Ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of those who lost their lives due to Cyclone Tauktae was also announced.

After conducting an aerial survey of the cyclone-affected areas of Gujarat and Diu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, 19 May, announced financial assistance of Rs 1,000 crore for immediate relief work in Gujarat.

Modi also announced ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of those who lost their lives due to Cyclone Tauktae in all the affected states. Moreover, Rs 50,000 would be given to the injured, PTI reported.

PM Modi was on a day-long visit to his home state Gujarat and the Union Territory of Diu, to take stock of the situation after the devastation caused by Cyclone Tauktae.

The Prime Minister conducted an aerial survey of areas such as Una, Diu, Jafarabad, and Mahuva. He also held a review meeting with Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and officials of the state administration in Ahmedabad later.

The Prime Minister had landed at the Bhavnagar airport at around 11 am. He will return to the national capital in the evening.

Tauktae to Weaken in the Next 12 Hours

Cyclone Tauktae is very likely to move north-eastwards and weaken gradually into a well-marked low-pressure area during the next 12 hours, the India Meteorological Department said.

Remnant of the system is very likely to move further north-eastwards across Rajasthan to west Uttar Pradesh during the next two days, said National Weather Forecasting Centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

After days of progression, Cyclone Tauktae made landfall in Gujarat on Monday, 17 May. Several states including Karnataka, Kerala, Goa, and Maharashtra have reported loss of life and property.
