Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray visisted Raigad district on Friday, 5 June which was affected by Cyclone Nisarga that hit Maharashtra and Gujarat this week. Thackeray has announced Rs 100-crore financial assistance for the district, reports ANI.

A a 58-year-old man had died after an electric pole fell on him in the Alibag area of Raigad on Wednesday due to the cyclone. In another incident, a 65-year-old woman died and five of her family members were injured in an incident of wall collapse in Pune district.

A day after the tragedy, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) had begun the restoration work. 20 teams were deployed across Maharashtra, 7 teams each in Raigad and Mumbai, according to Satya Pradhan, Director General of NDRF.

Cyclone 'Nisarga' Weakens Into Cyclonic Storm

Cyclone ‘Nisarga’ has weakened into a cyclonic storm over coastal Maharashtra, the IMD said late on Wednesday, adding that light to moderate rainfall is expected at most places, with heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely at isolated places in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh in the next 24 hours.

"Extremely heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at isolated places in Raigad, Dhule, Nandurbar, Nashik districts, and heavy to very heavy rainfall in Thane, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Ahmednagar, Pune, Kolhapur, Satara districts in Maharashtra during the next two and a half hours," the department was quoted by ANI as saying.

Man Dies After Electric Pole Falls on Him in Alibag

A 58-year-old man died after an electric pole fell on him in Alibag area of Raigad on Wednesday, the district collector said, reported ANI.

In another incident, a 65-year-old woman died and five of her family members were injured in an incident of wall collapse in Pune district.

'Cyclone Nisarga to Weaken Into Depression in Next 6 Hrs': IMD Director General

“We expect that Cyclone Nisarga will weaken into a deep depression within the next three hours and further weaken into a depression in the next six hours. Currently, it lays centred over Pune,” IMD’s Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra was quoted by ANI as saying on Wednesday evening.

Several low-lying areas in Pune were inundated due to rains brought by the cyclone, with incidents of trees falling due to gusty winds also reported in some parts of the city, according to PTI.

Operations were scheduled to resume at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai from 6 pm on Wednesday, hours after the airport halted take-offs or landings in view of Cyclone ‘Nisarga’, the airport public relations officer said.

'Trees Uprooted, Electricity Lines Damaged': Raigad Collector

Speaking to The Quint on the situation in Raigad, where Cyclone Nisarga made landfall on Wednesday, collector Nidhi Chaudhari said as many as 13,541 people have been evacuated in the district.

"There's heavy rainfall, gusty winds are blowing all over the district. It started from Diveagar, Shrivardhan and then it moved to Alibag. Right now, it's widening across the district. Trees have been uprooted in many locations, electricity lines have also been damaged badly. Tin sheds that were not tightly fixed have been damaged," she said.

"People who were either living in kaccha houses or in slums, or even if they were living in pucca houses but on the ground floor surrounded by trees, which could have fallen on the building — such people were evacuated until midnight yesterday," she added.

Around 390 people have been shifted to a relief camp setup at a school in Alibag, in view of the Cyclone Nisarga that will cross Maharashtra coast between Harihareshwar and Daman, very close to Alibag, reports ANI.

BMC Arranges Schools As Temporary Shelters

BMC has arranged about 35 schools as temporary shelters for citizens who have been appealed to relocate there, ANI quoted Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) as saying.

93 lifeguards have been deployed at 6 beaches, said BMC.

'Strong Winds of 100-120 Kmph Over Mumbai Between 1 PM-4 PM'

Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, DGM, IMD says, "Cyclone Nisarga will cross Maharashtra coast between Harihareshwar and Daman, very close to Alibag between 1 pm to 4 pm. While crossing the coast it will have strong winds of 100-120 kmph over Mumbai, Thane & Raigad districts of Maharashtra," reports ANI.

"Wind speed of about 80 to 90 kmph is expected over Maharashtra's Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and Palghar. Over Gujarat's Navsari & Valsad wind speed of about 60-80 kmph is expected. By midnight it will weaken & by tomorrow morning it will become depression", he adds.

Cyclone Nisarga 200 Kms Away From Mumbai

Cyclone Nisarga has become severe cyclonic storm, it is 200 kms away from Mumbai, ANI reports Shubhangi Bhute, Scientist, IMD Mumbai as saying.

"The cyclone is moving north easterly towards Alibag in Raigad district. The Severe Cyclonic Storm Nisarga is likely to cross south of Alibag between 1 pm to 3 pm," she added.

Trains Diverted from Mumbai

Central Railway has rescheduled, diverted and regulated some trains from Mumbai due to Cyclone Nisarga, PTI reports.

Wind Speed 90-100 Kmph Now

Cyclone Nisarga's eye diameter has decreased to about 65 km, ANI quotes Government of India. Wind speed has increased from 85-95 kmph to 90-100 kmph, gusting to 110 mph.

Cyclone Nisarga Approaching North Maharashtra Coast

According to IMD's recent bulletin, Cyclone Nisarga is approaching north Maharashtra coast with a speed of 13 kmph during the past 6 hours. It is 155 km south-southwest of Alibag and 200 km south-southwest of Mumbai.

20 NDRF Teams in Maharashtra 

According to NDRF, 20 teams of NDRF have been deployed in Maharashtra out of which Mumbai has 8 teams, Raigad 5 teams, Palghar 2 teams, Thane 2 teams (1 enroute), Ratnagiri 2 teams and Sindhudurg 1 team, reports ANI.

Indian Navy Ready With Resources to Deal With Cyclone Nisarga

Western Naval Command has mobilised adequate resources for flood relief, rescue and diving assistance in the event of excessive rainfall and flooding of both, urban and rural areas in coordination with the respective State Governments on the Western seaboard, the Indian Navy stated.

Section 144 Imposed in Greater Mumbai Ahead of Cyclone Nisarga

The Commissioner of Police, Gr Mumbai issues prohibitory orders u/s 144 of CrPC restricting any presence or movement of persons in public places along the coast like beaches, promenades, parks and other such places near the coastline to prevent loss of life and property.

'Nisarga' Likely to Intensify Into 'Severe Cyclonic Storm' in 12 Hrs, Make Landfall Near Alibag Tomorrow

The IMD on Tuesday said that Cyclone 'Nisarga' is very likely to intensify into a "severe cyclonic storm" over the next 12 hours and will cross the Maharashtra and south Gujarat coast on Wednesday.

"Cyclone Nisarga is likely to make landfall near Alibag tomorrow. At the time of landfall, wind speed is expected to be 100 kmph. Palghar, Pune, Thane, Mumbai, Raigad, Dhule and Nandurbar, Nashik are expected to receive heavy rainfall tomorrow," Dr Anupam Kashyapi of IMD in Pune was quoted by ANI as saying.

"Present weather conditions indicate that depression lies over east-central and its adjoining areas of the southeast Arabian Sea, and is moving northwards. It's lying over 360 km southwest of Panjim, 670 km south-southwest of Mumbai and 900km of south-southwest of Surat," says Naga Ratna, IMD Scientist, as per ANI.

Depression to Intensify into Cyclonic Storm in 12 Hours: IMD

"The depression over east-central Arabian Sea moved northwards with a speed of 11 kmph during past 6 hrs, intensified into a deep depression, and lay centered at 0530 hours today," says India Meteorological Department.

IMD also added, "It is very likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm during next 12 hours and further into a severe cyclonic storm during subsequent 12 hours," ANI reports.

NDRF Team in Maharashtra
