A video of a speech delivered by CRPF woman constable Khushbu Chauhan on 27 September has gone viral. In the video, which is doing the rounds on many social media platforms, the constable can be heard criticising narratives against the abrogation of Article 370 and protests at JNU, among other things.

The video has triggered a social media battle. While on the one hand, it is receiving immense love and being shared on social media, people are also calling it out as ‘hate speech’.

However, Constable Khushbu Chauhan was speaking in a debate competition organised by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). The topic of the debate was ‘Is It Possible to Eliminate Terror While Following Human Rights?’

Speaking against the motion, the constable said that nobody talks about human rights when Army Jawans are martyred while fighting terrorists.

Reacting to the video, CRPF spokesperson told The Quint that the CRPF has tremendous respect for human rights, further adding that the constable was only participating in a debate and people must not get offended.

“Speech was delivered in a debate competition and nothing to get offended please. She is speaking against the motion in a debate competition organised by NHRC. We in CRPF respect the human rights unconditionally.”
Dinakaran, Spokesperson CRPF

He also said that some portion of the speech should have been avoided by the constable.

“She was asked to speak against the motion and has delivered a speech with brilliance but some portion should have been avoided. She has been suitably advised. We appreciate the respect and concern for CRPF.”
Dinakaran, Spokesperson CRPF
