A 34-year-old woman, who used to dupe people by claiming to be the vice-president of a leading English news channel, was arrested, police said on Thursday, 23 August.
The woman, Payal Samuel, was nabbed from Mumbai on 15 August and brought to Delhi, they added. She was arrested on the basis of a complaint lodged by Ravi Patel. He runs a leading travel agency in the city and also provides online air tickets and hotel bookings.
He alleged she had defrauded him to the tune of ₹30 lakh within one-and-half month by purchasing air tickets (domestic as well as international), foreign exchange, and hotel bookings etc, the police said.

Police in Jharkhand’s Palamu have booked two men for allegedly raping a minor girl inside a moving vehicle in July, officials said on Wednesday, 22 August, after the video of the crime was widely shared on social media.
The incident was reported to the district police on Wednesday by the girl and her family after they came to know that the video had gone viral.
“A case against the two accused persons under different sections of IT and POCSO Act have been lodged and we are conducting raids to nab them,” Palamu’s superintendent of police Indrajit Mahatha said.

A nine-year-old girl was allegedly raped by an unidentified person on Wednesday, 22 August, when she went to defecate in a jungle near her house in southwest Delhi, as the “portable toilets there did not have electricity”.
An FIR against unknown persons has been registered under IPC sections 376 (rape), 365 (kidnapping) as well as relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act at the police station in the area, police said.
“Police has detained 20 local youths in the matter,” said a senior police officer.

A five-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her relative in a village under Manesar on Wednesday, 22 August night. The villagers caught the 22-year-old accused and handed him over to the police after roughing him up.
Shakuntala Dhull, the chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Gurugram, said that the victim underwent surgery and is in a critical condition after the operation.
According to inspector Kanta Devi, the station house officer of women’s police station, the incident took place around 10.30 pm on Wednesday when the girl, the youngest of nine sisters, was alone at her house in the village.

Tension erupted in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut after an eight-year-old girl was raped at a religious place on Wednesday, the police said on Thursday, 23 August. The accused has been arrested and the victim has been sent for medical examination.
Following the incident, which took place in Nauchandi police station area in Meerut, the victim’s family protested outside the police station. The family alleged that the police did not act against the accused as his father was an influential person.

A Dalit teenager has been booked by Firozabad district police for allegedly throwing acid on at his former classmate.
According to police, the incident took place in Karbala colony under the jurisdiction of Dakshin police station in the early hours of Thursday, 23 August, at about 2:30 am. The 17-year-old girl was sleeping on the terrace of her house beside her mother, when the assailant allegedly crept up to her and threw acid on her.
The girl’s parents said she had sustained severe burns on her chest and both arms. She has been admitted to a private hospital in Agra city.

A 37-year-old married woman was allegedly duped of Rs 1.34 lakh by a man she befriended on a social networking website. The man made repeated attempts to convince the woman that he was her “true love” and promised to send her Christmas gifts, police said on Thursday, 23 August.
Trusting her online ‘friend’, she was conned into transferring Rs 1.34 lakh in the garb of custom fees, penalty and conversion charges by the man and his accomplices, posing as officials of a courier company, police said.

A 35-year-old labourer was kidnapped and killed allegedly by his contractor and his accomplices over a monetary dispute in north-west Delhi’s Shalimar Bagh, the police said on Thursday, 23 August.
Two persons, identified as contractor Rajesh Kumar and his nephew Vicky alias Vikram were arrested in the case. Two of their accomplices, identified as Ravi alias Nikki and Pawan are absconding, the police said.
Deceased Moti Lal, a resident of Singhalpur, had borrowed 30,000 rupees from Mr Rajesh. He had been forcing Moti to return the money, but the latter was unable to pay, they said.

Four minors, all sons of UP Police constables posted in Ghaziabad, have been booking for allegdly molesting and trying to kidnap a 16-year-old girl.
The complainant, who is the daughter of a head constable posted in Noida, lives in Masuri. In her complaint to police, the class 11 student alleged that the four boys, three of whom study in her school, have been harassing her for the past two months and tried to abduct her two days ago. Two of the boys study in class 11 while the others are in class 12.
