The number of coronavirus cases in Delhi crossed the 5,000 mark on Tuesday, 5 May, while Maharashtra’s case tally crossed 15,000 according to figures released by the health departments of the respective states.
Total positive cases in Delhi stood at 5,104 of which 206 cases were reported today. At least 841 new cases and 34 deaths reported in Maharashtra today, taking the total number of cases to 15,525.
Meanwhile, Telangana CM K Chandrashekhar Rao announced that the lockdown in the state has been extended till 29 May, becoming the first state to extend the lockdown beyond 17 May.
According to the Union Health Ministry, the number of coronavirus cases in India surged to 46,711 on Tuesday with the death toll standing at 1,583.

Lav Aggarwal, Joint Secretary, Health Ministry COVID-19 said that the sudden spike in the number of cases was due to delay by states in reporting numbers.
“We persuaded certain states as we were not receiving reports of cases/deaths on time from them, after which the cases have been reported and we have seen spike in death cases today,” he said.
A total of 98 personnel of the three services including serving, retired and dependent family members are admitted in hospitals after being tested positive, Col Aman Anand, Army Spokesperson was quoted by ANI as saying.
