The number of coronavirus cases in India rose by 10,974 to 3,54,065 on Wednesday, 17 June, while 2,003 new reported fatalities took the death toll to 11,903. According to the Health Ministry data, there are now 1,55,227 active cases across the country, while 1,86,934 patients have been cured or discharged.
The huge spike in the number of deaths comes as states have updated their respective figures. The Health Ministry has said that the data on the website is based on entry by the states, with Delhi and Maharashtra having reconciled data from previous days.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday interacted with the chief ministers of states badly hit by the outbreak. On Tuesday, the PM had interacted with CMs of states and Union territories whose case load is relatively less.

PM Modi says the number of patients who have recovered from COVID-19 till now is more than the number of active cases in the country, reports ANI.
PM Modi says at present, ventilator and ICU care are needed for very few patients across the country.
"We have been able to fight COVID-19 and control its spread because of the timely measures taken by us," he adds as per ANI.
AAP MLA Atishi has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, NDTV reported. According to the report, she is now in home quarantine given her mild symptoms.

2,174 new cases of coronavirus were recorded in Tamil Nadu today as per state's health officials. Total case tally in the state stands at 50,193 out of which 27,624 have been discharged. Death toll is at 576.

MHA on Wednesday said 16,618 test samples were collected on 15-16 June in Delhi after decisions taken by Amit Shah to double the testing.
"Reports of 6,510 tests received so far, remaining to be received by 18 June," added MHA.
MHA on Wednesday announced that from 18 June, tests will be done via new Rapid Antigen methodology approved by ICMR.
"Delhi would be given priority for these kits. 169 centers have also been set up across Delhi," added MHA.
"Price of COVID-19 test in Delhi fixed at Rs 2,400 after suggestion of committee set up by HM Amit Shah," says MHA.
Maharashtra reports 3,307 new COVID-19 positive cases and 114 deaths today, taking the total number of positive cases and deaths to 1,16,752 and 5,651 respectively, ANI cites the State Health Department.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), on Wednesday said, the world has now recorded more than 8 million cases of COVID-19, ANI reports.
According to him, in the first two months, 85,000 cases were reported and in the past two months, 6 million cases have been reported.
WHO Director-General says Dexamethasone, a common steroid, has shown to have beneficial effects on patients severely ill with COVID-19, ANI reports.
He adds, "According to early findings shared with WHO, for patients on oxygen alone, dexamethasone treatment was shown to reduce mortality by about one fifth."
Former Union minister and veteran RJD leader Raghuvansh Prasad Singh has tested positive for COVID-19, PTI cites his close aide.
