The number of coronavirus cases in India jumped by 6,977 to 1,38,845 in the last 24 hours, while the death toll rose by 154 to 4,021 on Monday, 25 May.

As the cases continue to record a steep rise, ICMR says India now has the capacity to do two lakh tests per day. The medical body also says that India developed an intelligent testing strategy to remain 'ahead of the virus'.

Meanwhile, after a two-month halt amid the lockdown, domestic flight operations resumed from Monday, with early morning visuals showing passengers wearing masks arriving at various airports across the country. However, reports also came in of several flights getting cancelled, leading to confusion among the travellers.

The coronavirus death toll in the United States rose by 638, bringing the total lives lost in the country to 97,686, AFP reported on Monday, citing the Johns Hopkins University tracker.

Domestic Flights Resume Today; Mask-Wearing Passengers at Airports

After a two-month halt due to the coronavirus outbreak, domestic flight operations resumed from Monday, 25 May, with early morning visuals showing passengers wearing masks arriving at various airports across the country.

On Sunday, Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri tweeted saying that domestic flights will recommence across the country from Monday except in Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal, where operations will start on 26 May and on 28 May.

COVID-19: India's Case Tally Rises to Over 1.38 Lakh, Biggest 1-Day Spike

The number of coronavirus cases in India jumped by 6,977 to 1,38,845 in the last 24 hours, while the death toll rose by 154 to 4,021 on Monday. According to the Health Ministry data, there are now 77,103 active cases across the country, while 57,720 patients have been cured or discharged and one has migrated.

As Domestic Flight Ops Open Up, Reports Come in Of Cancellations

While many passengers reached airports early on Monday as domestic flight operations commenced across the country, reports also came in of some flights being cancelled, leading to confusion.

Around 80 arrival/departure flights from Delhi's IGI airport have been cancelled, ANI reported. Earlier the flight schedule was made for all airports, including those in West Bengal (where operations will commence from 28 May), Maharashtra and Chennai (where limited operations are allowed), according to the news agency.

Confusion prevailed at Mumbai airport too over some flights reportedly getting cancelled. Similar was the case at Thiruvananthapuram.

At Bengaluru's Kempegowda Airport, there had been five arrivals, 17 departures and nine flight cancellations till 9 am, as per ANI.

Maharashtra Minister Ashok Chavan Tests Positive for Coronavirus

Maharashtra PWD (Public Works Department) Minister Ashok Chavan is reported to have tested positive for coronavirus, Congress sources said in Mumbai late on Sunday, 25 May, reported IANS.

The former chief minister's condition is said to be asymptomatic and stable, and he is admitted to a hospital in Nanded, reports said.

SC Allows Air India to Operate Repatriation Flights With Full Capacity For 10 Days

Hearing a petition filed by the Centre and Air India against the Bombay High Court order to keep middle seats vacant in international repatriation flights, the Supreme Court on Monday allowed the national carrier to carry out the operation of the relief flights without leaving vacant seats for 10 days, Bar & Bench reported.

After this time, these non-scheduled flights would have to operate in accordance with the interim order passed by the Bombay HC, SC said, remanding the matter to the high court with a request to pass an effective interim order on the next date of hearing, the report said.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation and Air India are free to alter any norms it may consider appropriate during the pendency of the matter, Chief Justice SA Bobde was quoted by ANI as saying.

'Situation Under Control Even After Lockdown Relaxations': Delhi CM Kejriwal

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday said that the situation is still under control in the national capital even after the lockdown restrictions were relaxed from 18 May. "Around 3,500 COVID-19 cases were reported since the fourth phase of lockdown began... We are ready to deal with the situation if there's a spike in cases of coronavirus," he was quoted by PTI as saying.

The CM claimed that while 3,314 COVID-19 patients are getting treatment at their homes, 2,000 have been admitted to hospitals.

“Government and private hospitals in Delhi have 4,500 beds for COVID-19 patients and out of these, 2,000 are occupied.”

The capital city has the fourth-highest number of coronavirus cases in the country at 13,418. As many as 6,540 patients have been cured or discharged.

635 New COVID-19 Cases in Delhi; Tally Rises to 14,053

As many as 635 new COVID-19 cases have been reported in Delhi, taking the tally in the national capital to 14,053, including 276 deaths and 6,771 recovered/discharged/migrated patients.

A bus carrying migrant labourers to West Bengal met with an accident in Sikidiri Ghati of Ranchi rural on Monday, ANI reports.

20 people have been shifted to RIMS hospital so far according to the report.

805 New COVID-19 Cases in Tamilnadu 

805 COVID-19 positive cases and 7 deaths were recorded in TamilNadu today. 407 people have been discharged. Total tally of cases stands at 17,082 in the state, according to the health department.

'Some officials of Rail Board have Tested COVID-19 Positive': Ministry 

Some officials of Railway Board have recently tested COVID-19 positive. All offices of Rail Bhawan will remain close on 26 and 27 May for intensive sanitization, says Ministry of Railways according to ANI.

"Offices at 4th floor of Rail Bhawan to remain close till 29 May for thorough disinfection," it adds.

'Action Has Returned to Indian Skies': Aviation Minister

Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Monday says, "From no domestic passenger flights yesterday to 532 flights and 39,231 passengers today, action has returned to Indian skies."

He adds, "With Andhra Pradesh set to resume operations from tomorrow and West Bengal from 28 May, these numbers are all set to increase further."

2,436 New COVID-19 Cases in Maharashtra

Maharashtra reports 2,436 new COVID-19 cases and 60 deaths on Monday, taking case count to 52,667 and fatalities to 1,695, says Health official according to IANS.

'Capacity of Testing 2 Lakh Samples Per Day': ICMR

According to ICMR, the country now has a capacity of testing 2 lakh samples per day, reports ANI.

"India now has 610 total labs and is currently testing 1.1 lakh samples in a day. It has the capacity to test 1.4 lakh samples per day, which is being raised to 2 lakh samples per day," said ICMR.

Delhi Govt Issues Guidelines for Domestic Travel

Delhi government has issued guidelines for domestic travel (Air/Train/Interstate bus travel), reports ANI.

According to the advisory, all passengers shall be advised to download Aarogya Setu app on their mobile devices.

Biggest Single-Day Rise in Pune 

Biggest single-day rise of 459 COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra's Pune district was recorded today taking the tally to 6,153. Death toll stands at 280 in the city with 8 more fatalities according to officials, ANI reports.
