In a video that is going viral on social media, Congress took a jibe at Prime Minsiter Modi’s ‘hugplomacy’, as the Congress has called it. The video features PM Modi hugging various international leaders that he met during his tenure as the Prime Minister.

The one-minute-long video shows Modi hugging world leaders like US President Donald Trump, Japanese PM Shinzo Abe and French President Emmanuel Macron among many others and ends on a sarcastic note, saying “We can’t wait for more #hugplomacy.”

The video comes on the day Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu landed in New Delhi on Sunday on the first leg of his six-day India tour.

Slamming the tweet, BJP said that it was a despicable joke. While addressing a press conference, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said that this is the lowest the Congress has ever stooped.

Cyrus Broacha making fun of the Prime Minister is a different thing, the main opposition party doing it is a different thing. This is the lowest the Congress has ever stooped. We condemn this. There is no sense and balance left in Congress, if there is any, they should apologise. I have very little hope, though.
Prakash Javadekar, Union Minister

Sambit Patra, BJP spokesperson, echoed Javadekar’s sentiments:

The world has its eyes on Israeli PM Netanyahu’s visit to India and a tweet from India’s main opposition party at this time is unacceptable. First they called him neech, then they asked him to sell tea and now this. A joke on PM Modi is a joke on the 125 crore Indians. Rahul Gandhi should apologise.
Sambit Patra, BJP Spokesperson

Patra went on to say that Rahul Gandhi in his speeches claims to win people over with love but that the PM today is winning the entire world with love as he is the third most famous global leader in the world according to surveys.

This isn’t the first time the Congress has taken a jibe at Modi’s meeting with world leaders and used the term hugplomacy.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi in November 2017 had said that Modi’s ‘hug policy’ had failed after Pakistan’s terror mastermind Hafiz Saeed was released from house arrest. Gandhi’s tweet referred to Modi’s hugs with President Donald Trump in his US visit last year.

Congress’ latest joke is predictably drawing criticism from the BJP rank and file.
