A Muslim cleric was allegedly thrashed by a group of men and forced to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’ in Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat on Sunday, 14 July, according to news agency ANI.
The victim, Imlakur Rahman, said that a group of ten to twelve men attacked him while he was on his way home in Sarora village.
Meanwhile, Ramala Deputy Superintendent of Police Anuj Kumar Chaudhary said that there was no religious angle to the incident, and added that it was a case of assault.
Chaudhary further said that the victim did not mention the religious chant and said he had been thrashed for a different reason when he first went to file a complaint at the Budhana Police Station.
An FIR has been registered in the matter.
