On 25 July, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s grandnephew Chandra Kumar Bose took to Twitter to say that “Gandhi treated goats as mata” and “Hindus should stop eating goat’s meat”, in a sarcatic tweet criticising the increasing incidents of lynching by cow vigilantes in the country.

However, this tweet by the West Bengal BJP vice president has sparked a Twitter war between him and the Governor of Tripura, Tathagata Roy, who hit back at Bose saying: “We Hindus regard the cow as our mother and not the goat.”

As the alteraction between Bose and Roy continued, Bose went on to say that despite the fact that “we are staunch Hindus, we believe religion has nothing to do with what you eat”.

However, Roy tweeted saying, “I am somewhat at a loss to understand you – I mean 'you' singular. Who are 'we'? What are "such archaic views" – that the cow is our mother?”

Bose continued with his explanation saying, “’We' means progressive people of new India who respect views of others, but don't accept any animal as their 'Mata'. We are animal lovers & activists, but don't put any animal above humans!”

To which Roy replied saying, “Progressive people of new India....who want to take Bharat to new Heights”! Hmm. I presume you have determined the views of all such ‘progressive people’. Also, since I understand you’re a Vice-President of West Bengal BJP, I presume these views are also shared by your party!”

Chandra Kumar Bose joined the BJP in the year 2016 while Tathagata Roy is a BJP leader who became the Governor of Tripura in the year 2015. Roy describes himself as a right-wing Hindu socio-political thinker, writer and ideologue.
