In a shocking incident, a man walking on burning coals to prove his religious devotion, accidentally dropped his daughter onto the hot ground. The regrettable incident occurred in Jalandhar, during celebrations in devotion to a Hindu goddess.
Bystanders and other devotees at the function came to the man and his child’s assistance and tried to pull them out. Details of whether the two were injured critically are still awaited.
According to The Daily Mail, a similar incident also occurred in Jalandhar in 2013, when a mother carrying her daughter on hot coals tumbled and fell.
The ritual of walking on hot coals to prove one’s devotion to god is not just performed in India. At the Sri Mariamman Temple in Singapore, thousands of Hindu devotees flock to pay their respects by partaking in the annual fire-walking festival. It is usually believed that the goddess will bestow the devotee with what they have wished for if they walk on fire.
