A woman arrested from her home in Boisar, Mumbai, for running a brothel, was also found to have murdered her husband 12 years ago, reported The Indian Express.
Four girls were rescued from the home of Sarita Bharti, 43, after Mumbai police arrested her on Monday, 4 December. Two days later, on Wednesday, 6 December, they unearthed the skeletal remains of her husband, who she had allegedly murdered back in 2004, the report stated.
When confronted with the allegations, Bharti allegedly led the police to the place where she buried the corpse of her husband 12 years ago. She also allegedly confessed that she had done so with the help of an accomplice, her lover Ashish Kamlesh, who the police said is absconding, the report added.
Fattesinh Patil, Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Boisar, told The Indian Express that Bharti said that her husband would often come home under the influence of alcohol and physically assault her, and it was in the midst of one of these quarrels that she struck him. With the help of Kamlesh, she dug a pit in her home and buried him.
However, a Hindustan Times report said that on the day of the murder, Sarita’s husband – Sachdev Bharti – had returned home to find her and Kamlesh in a compromising position, following which they had ‘stoned him to death’. She had then told her neighbours and friends that Sachdev had left Boisar looking for a job elsewhere and had not returned.
The police, who had earlier booked Sarita and Kamlesh under the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act for running a brothel, later imposed IPC section 302 on Sarita alone, booking her for murder, and are continuing their investigations, reports The Indian Express.
The body has currently been sent for forensic examination, to confirm if it is Sachdev’s.
According to The Times of India (TOI), the police also received a tip-off from unknown sources that Sarita had murdered two other persons and buried their body in the same compound. However, they have not yet unearthed any other bodies and police told TOI that Sarita has not confessed to killing anyone else.
However, they did mention that Sarita would often perform black magic at home 'to lure customers', the TOI report adds.
