A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and the Vice President of Anantnag district was shot dead by suspected militants at Verinag area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Saturday, 4 May.
The gunmen, believed to be militants, fired upon the man identified as 60-year-old Gul alias Attal at Nowgam area of Verinag around 10 pm. He reportedly received bullet wounds in his chest and abdomen.
A police officer also confirmed the incident and said that the Gul was taken to District Hospital, Anantnag, where doctors declared him brought dead on arrival.
A senior doctor said that Gul received five bullet wounds, three in the chest and two in the abdomen.
J&K Governor Satya Pal Malik on Sunday, 5 May, has ordered an inquiry conducted into the killing of political workers over the last few months.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to condemn the attack.
“Strongly condemn the killing of @BJP4JnK leader Shri Ghulam Mohammed Mir. His contribution towards strengthening the party in J&K will always be remembered. There is no place for such violence in our country. Condolences to his family and well-wishers (sic).”
PDP President Mehbooba Mufti too condemned the attack and condoled the family of Mohammad.
