Stumped after receiving calls from pubs and restaurants that their students are involved in under-age drinking, many school managements in Bengaluru decided to keep a check on them. During random checks, some were in for a rude shock on finding premixed alcoholic drinks instead of plain water or fruit juice in water bottles.
Mansoor Ali Khan, board member of Delhi Public Group of Schools, said they frequently check water bottles in all their five schools located in Bengaluru and have found at least 16 instances of children carrying alcohol to school in the past two years.
“We have found that children carry alcohol to school in their water bottles. It is difficult to detect as it is mixed with juice or water and is transparent,” he said.

The 10th Bengaluru International Film Festival (Biffes) will be held from 22 February to 1 March 2018. Films will be screened in Bengaluru and Mysuru simultaneously, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced on Monday after releasing the logo for the festival.
Sources, however, insist that films might not be screened in Mysuru. They said Siddaramaiah, who earlier held a meeting with the organisers, had directed them to restrict the screenings to Bengaluru as the response in Mysuru is poor.
The film festival will be inaugurated in front of the Vidhana Soudha. Unlike last year, the valedictory function, too, will be held in Bengaluru.
A lifetime achievement award with a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh will be presented on the occasion. The films will be based on the themes of human rights and social justice. They will be shown on 11 screens at PVR Cinemas in Orion Mall, Rajajinagar.

A 38-year-old property agent was arrested for stabbing and branding a 14-year-old boy who questioned him why he came to his house often to meet his widowed mother. Despite coming under attack, the boy managed to free himself and rode his two-wheeler for around 14 km to his uncle’s house.
The boy’s mother was in the house when he was attacked. Police said she did not protect him.
This is not the first time that the boy has been assaulted. He had questioned the property agent about his frequent visits earlier too. That time, the accused removed his clothes and whipped him with a leather belt.
“My nephew’s exams were just three months away then and I had no option than to send him back to his mother so that he could pursue his academic life,” the boy’s uncle said.
