Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his last tribute to Atal Bihari Vajpayee who passed away on the evening of Thursday, 16 August in New Delhi’s AIIMS.
As the country mourned the loss of one of its charismatic prime ministers, well-wishers thronged Vajpayee’s residence where his mortal remains have been kept, wrapped in tricolour.
Tomorrow, 17 August, his body will be brought to the BJP headquarters at 9 AM, following which he will be accorded state funeral at Smriti Sthal.

Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who has been ailing for long, was, on 11 June, admitted to AIIMS for a routine check-up, the BJP said in a statement in New Delhi.
The hospital, in a statement, said that Vajpayee's condition is stable and a team of doctors under the supervision of Dr Randeep Guleria is conducting a number of routine tests. Dr Guleria serves as the director of AIIMS.
The BJP leader ruled India as prime minister for thirteen days in 1996, following which he again took the office for 13 months from 1998-99, before finally pulling a complete five-year stint as PM from 1999-2004.
As his health deteriorated, he slowly withdrew from public life and has been confined to his residence for the last few years.
Shortly after Vajpayee was hospitalised, Congress President Rahul Gandhi visited the former prime minister at AIIMS, on the evening of 11 June.
In what seemed like a hurried after-thought, BJP bigwig PM Narendra Modi and Amit Shah rushed to the hospital to pay a visit to the party senior.
During his 50-minute long stay at the hospital, PM Modi enquired about the well-being of Vajpayee and met his family members, official sources said.
Union Health Minister JP Nadda and former Union Minister MM Joshi were among other BJP leaders who visited Vajpayee at the hospital.
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and senior BJP leader LK Advani reached AIIMS to visit former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
While earlier reports said that Vajpayee was admitted for a routine check-up and that his condition is stable, hospital sources confirmed to PTI that the former prime minister was admitted following complaints of lower respiratory tract infection and kidney issues and is undergoing dialysis.
"He was admitted with complaints of lower respiratory tract infection and kidney issues. He is in the ICU and undergoing dialysis," a source at the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) said.
A team of doctors under the supervision of AIIMS Director Randeep Guleria are conducting tests on the 93-year-old leader, a statement from the hospital said.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister and BJP leader Shivraj Singh Chouhan conveyed his wishes for Vajpayee’s speedy recovery at a press conference in Bhopal. He said, "I pray to God for the speedy recovery of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who has always inspired us to fight against hardship. The whole country is waiting for you to return healthy from AIIMS."
Union Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan after visiting former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee at AIIMS said, “He is fine, there is nothing to worry.”
Union Minister VIjay Goel said that he hopes Vajpayee recovers soon and is discharged by 12 June. He told reporters, “His medical bulletin has been released, he had a urine infection and is being treated for that. I have complete hope that he will be able to go home tomorrow.”
A statement by AIIMS, New Delhi said, “Former PM Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee was admitted today at AIIMS, New Delhi for investigation and evaluation. He has been diagnosed with a urinary tract infection for which appropriate treatment has been closely monitored and treated by a team of doctors.”

Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu, while speaking to the media, said that he spoke to officers in Delhi to enquire about Vajpayee’s health.

A health bulletin released by AIIMS over Vajpayee’s health stated that the former PM is stable and is responding to treatment. It further stated that he will be hospitalised till the infection is controlled.

The ECMO circuit acts as an artificial heart and lung for patients during therapy.
